Born in Indiana in 1955. In 1980 he started as a photographer. He won the World Press Photo Award twice, the first time in 1988 with a picture showing the victims of the earthquake in Armenia that year, and the second time in 1991with a photo of American sergeant Ken Kozakiewicz during the First Gulf War. For the images he made for his book "Moments of Revolution", on Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall, he won the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for photography. His book on Nelson Mandela will appear in May.
